The best way to answer the titled question is to look at your owner’s manual. Flip to the oil section to see the oil type and weight recommendation. In most cases, the manual will tell you that conventional motor oil is just fine. If you drive a high-performance automobile, the manual will likely recommend synthetic motor oil. In total, there are four different types of motor oil, and we are going to list these types below. We are also going to provide some information about each type.
Conventional
More cars are on the road with conventional oil in their engines than any other motor oil type. The reason why is most likely that this is the least expensive motor oil. In addition, conventional motor oil has been around for literally more than 100 years. This makes it tried and true. If you drive an automobile that does not require synthetic motor oil, you will do just fine with conventional. Just make sure to change the oil every 3,000 miles to ensure it remains viscous.
High-Mileage
If you drive an older automobile, you may want to consider switching from conventional to high-mileage motor oil. This oil contains additives to help it keep the engine cleaner. Older engines tend to build up a bunch of sludge. In addition, the oil contains additives to prevent oil leaks in the engine. This is another problem from which older engines suffer. Take a look at your odometer to see if you’ve got more than 75,000 miles on it. If you do, it may be time for high-mileage oil.
Synthetic
As we mentioned above, high-performance engines tend to run better on synthetic motor oil. This is because this oil contains additives to better protect against heat and wear and tear. This includes exterior heat or exterior cold. Synthetic oil stands up better to extreme weather conditions if you must drive in them. Synthetic motor oil also contains an additive that makes it retain its viscosity longer. This means you can go longer in between oil changes.
Synthetic Blend
Finally, if you don’t need full synthetic motor oil but would like some of the benefits, consider a synthetic blend. This motor oil combines both conventional and synthetic oil to create a happy medium between the two types.
